Integrative Medicine
Alternative and Spiritual Therapies
Integrative medicine combines conventional, complementary and alternative therapies to treat women safely and effectively. It depends on a partnership between the patient and the caregiver to treat the mind, body and spirit—all at the same time. At the Women’s Health Center, integrative medicine draws from a broader approach to patient care that is based on many models, including Western medicine and Eastern healing philosophies.
Conditions Treated Using Alternative Therapies
We use integrative practices to help treat the following conditions:
- Menopause
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Stress
- Depression
- Dysmenorrhea (uterine pain during menstruation)
- Pain from conditions such as arthritis and pelvic pain
- High cholesterol
Alternative Therapies
Here’s how it works: If a patient complains of a particular symptom, we will test for common medical conditions associated with the symptom. In addition, we will also look at the patient’s lifestyle and provide dietary suggestions and supplements. We may also offer recommendations for:
- acupuncture
- yoga classes
- tai chi classes
- massage therapy
- meditation classes
Spiritual Therapies
Another important component of overall health is spiritual well-being. Two of the most telling questions we ask patients are:
- Do you believe in something greater than yourself? and
- Do you believe there is a general purpose to life?
While patients need not subscribe to a specific religion, we believe spirituality can be an important part of healing.
